Rockhound Activity

The Rockhound activity has its own jewelry-making and stone-polishing facility - one of the best in the DFW area.

Members enjoy use of equipment for:

  • Rock cutting, polishing, and carving
  • Silver smithing for rings and other jewelry
  • Metal casting kilns
  • Gem cutting and faceting equipment
  • More

Classes are taught on use of all these as well as intarsia (inlaid metal and minerals), wire wrapped jewelry, bead making, and more. There is a required class for all new members to cover safety, use and care of rock equipment, and techniques for making cabochons (oval or round polished stones used in bolos, belt buckles, broaches, bracelets, pendants, rings, and such).

Activities

Meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday at 7:30 pm. Meetings are at the Lockheed Martin Recreation Area (LMRA) on Bryant Irvin. A variety of classes are offered at modest cost to cover materials and supplies. Signup for classes is offered each meeting. Some classes require the student to be present at the first class and others may be joined after the first class. The club takes several field trips each year to hunt for minerals, fossils, and gems.
